Member of Parliament

As a Member of Parliament (1994-2004)

In 1994, after Dr. Kodituwakku’s many successful years as an academic, diplomat and Governor, he resigned from this latter position to contest the Kaduwela electorate for the 1994 General Elections. The election results saw him voted into National Parliament, garnering the fifth-highest number of preferential votes from Colombo District. He was also appointed as the Official Media Spokesman for the UNP. This was the first time in the party’s history that such a position was created.

As an Opposition Member of Parliament representing Colombo District, and particularly Kaduwela, he initiated projects to bring electricity, water services and road renovations to various areas in the district. He also worked on providing adequate buildings, computers and equipment to schools, temples and churches.

Championing transparency, he served as a Member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committees on Education & Higher Education, Finance & Planning and Science & Technology.

Capitalizing on his diplomatic experiences in the Far East, he also held the position of Vice-President in the Sri Lanka – Korea Parliamentary Association and the position of General Secretary in the Sri Lanka – Japan Parliamentary Association.
