During his time as the Minister of Education, Dr. Kodituwakku was elected as a Member of the UNESCO Executive Board for Asia and the Pacific. The Executive Board of UNESCO, an international organization within the UN system, is the governing body that decides the world standards for education, culture and information. Dr. Kodituwakku was elected for a four year term, with 141 countries out of 173 member nations voting in favour of his candidature.
Among the candidates, he received the highest number of votes; this is the first and only time that a candidate from Sri Lanka got first place.
